About Me

My husband and I |
My name is Kate and I currently work at a charter school in Hamtramck, MI. This is my fourth year teaching. I currently teach one ELA class, two sixth grade math classes, and an eighth grade math class. My students are great this year, and I am really enjoying my classes. We have switched to all new curriculum for both ELA and Math, so this year has required a lot of learning on my part!

My best friend and I getting ready to zip line in Costa Rica |
I have been married to my wonderful husband, Matt for two and a half years. We have an adorable, terror of a puppy, Cabo. I love to camp, cook, and kayak. I love experimenting with new recipes and trying all types of cuisine. I also am the youngest of three children. A ton of exciting things are happening in my family right now. My brother is engaged to be married and my sister and brother-in-law are expecting a new baby! I love to travel. I have been to Paris, London, and Costa Rica. I also have traveled to several states in the USA.
Before this week, I too do not know what a podcast was and is. I thought it was something that was like amateur radio. After reading this week, I learned a little more and was excited to use it with my students. I was thinking about using them in my podcast assignment. We are going to do like a radio show and each of my students will be talking about a famous scientist. I had everything all planned out, and then Matt informed me that there may be a rule at my school where I need permission. So now I have to start all over again because next week, I work for 2 days, and my boss will want some type of form, I have to get it approved by the board and every parent must sign it. Yea, not seeing that happening.
ReplyDeleteI am going to keep the podcast , but I will use it in my classroom. I love the video this week because it made me think what an awesome formative( or summative I get them messed up) assessment! It allows the students to be authentic and creative which makes the assessment purposeful and can produce some real good results. I keep thinking about the podcast video, we were to watch this week, and remembering the smiles on the students’ faces. It makes me really want to do this in my classroom because it is fun! I found from Educational Technology about how teachers can use Podcasting the their classroom here are some ideas:
“How can I use Podcasting/Vodcasting in my classroom?
Teacher created Podcasts/Vodcasts:
Record classroom expectations at the beginning of the year
Classroom lectures
Supplemental information - information beyond what is covered in the classroom
State testing review sessions
Record classroom discussions
Podcasts/Vodcasts created by outside sources:
Get information from an expert in a given field
Supplemental information
iTunes U (a fairly new portion of iTunes, free podcasts and vodcasts from Universities, Colleges, Departments of Education, and other educational sources)
Student created Podcasts/Vodcasts:
Student projects
Student radio style broadcasts
Digital storybooks
Student created content overviews or reviews
Conduct interviews with individuals in the community or school”
Your question about using a podcast for math purposes is an interesting question. Since your students are older they could make a podcast about something younger students learn. I am thinking about Gonoodle, my kids love that website. These silly men, made a dance to skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s my kids love that song and it really helped them learn to skip count. Maybe you could have a student who likes to rap or wants to be a singer, and they can make a song or a rap about one of the operations or to solve a problem. If their song or rap is “ catchy” enough it will stick with the younger students. Think of the wonderful song of Call Me Maybe, all I need is a twenty seconds of the song to be singing it all day. I also watched on 60 minutes that dance is being used to teach students how to make math easier. If your student creates a catchy podcast maybe the teachers can use it as movement in the classroom. It is getting cold in Michigan if your students are like mine they are crawling at the windows to go outside and get some movement . I also thought of doing like a Dear Abby, Podcast where students “call in” their issues in math and your students answer their questions.
